Success for Our Kids

History of SOKs

The (Success for Our Kids (SOKs) Summer Enrichment camp had its early beginning in 2007 as a part of St. John Baptist Church. It resulted from a vision that God had given to Pastor Donald R. Ruth in the early 90s. The focus was to be an educational and spiritual camp for children and youth with the hope that it would serve as a deterrent to becoming a part of the judicial and governmental systems. The mission was and still is to offer a variety of educational, recreational and personal development services to children and youth through a variety of programs designed to meet their individual academic and personal needs while preparing them for the next grade level.

The organization has since become a nonprofit public charitable organization (2009) governed by a seven member board of directors that meets quarterly. It incorporates a 6-weeks summer enrichment camp for children ages 5-12, an after school tutoring program for grades K-12, and a mentoring program for ages 6-19.

The 6-weeks Summer Enrichment Camp, under the direction of a coordinator, utilizes certified teachers who provide instruction in math, reading and English to participants. Campers also enjoy a variety of other educational and personal/social development classes and field trips. Adults and teenagers support the camp through their volunteer services.

The After School Tutoring Program administered by a director and coordinator (certified teacher), provides group and one-on-one tutoring services twice weekly. The program utilizes community volunteers and junior/senior math and English majors from local colleges and universities. The program operates from September to April of each year.

The Mentoring Program, under the direction of a coordinator and assistant coordinator, provides group mentoring to children and youth. Various activities for educational and personal/social development are offered twice a month (every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 10:00 AM-12:00 noon). Participants also enjoy recreational/educational activities during their mentoring meetings or on various field trips.

Several community partners have supported the organization programs over the past years: ExxonMobil, Target, Wal Mart and Entergy. The organization depends on the community and community partners for financial support of its various programs.

It is hoped that SOKs will evolve into an outreach ministry reaching a multitude of young children.
